This is a hint/walkthrough file for the adult anime game "Dragon
Knight 4" (DK4). Supposedly there are both a DOS/V (Japanese) version
and a DOS version in Chinese from Elf. There is a fan project on the
Internet to translate the game to English, but it may have stalled
with no significant progress. This game is a sequel to Dragon Knight
3, which was converted to English by Megatech and sold as "Knights of
Xentar". "Dragon Knight 4" is also known as DK4, and I'll refer to it
that way from now on. Chinese version can be found compressed on 8
1.44M disks, although this may be missing music and voice (which are
blah and non-existent in the one that I got). The following is based
on the Chinese version, but I expect that the Japanese one is very
similar except for DOS/V-specific setup.

Thanks to Li Sun: The main character, a 15 year old, went on an
adventure in place of his father. With him is his father's friend's
son. At the first sign of trouble, a black cloud that is turning
everything to stone, they met a swordsman with most of his face
covered. Thus begin their adventure, running away from the black cloud
and taking back towns from the enemy. On their way, they pick up
commanders for their army and get to know the female commanders real
well. If you think the game has ended, you are at the half way point,
that is, you have to play this game twice to finish it... If Knights
of Xentar is the English version of Dragon Knight, the difference
between them is huge, H situations wise.

Well, I'm sure DK4 isn't KoX. Li Sun and www.gamefaqs.com both got
these games confused, and it will take some work to straighten them
out.

Somebody posted the following as DK4TRICK, so I don't have to work on
a photoshop patch very much! I modified the text and verified that
each of these really do work. Remember to insert the drive letter
where you have the game installed, e.g. "H", where the "?" appears
below.
DK 4 doesn't have a pic viewer when you finish the game, but you can
use the following tricks to see the pictures:
- To see all CGs (but not animated like they are in the game), start
the game with this command:
DRA4 TEST.MES H x ?
Replace ? with the drive letter where the game is installed.
- To see all H scenes, start the game with this command:
DRA4 H.MES H x ?
You'll get a menu of H scenes, pick one then move the mouse around
to various places and click. Press the Ctrl key to speed up text
display. If you keep playing after the H scene ends, the game may
hang.
- To see the ending with everybody or with nobody, start the game
with this command:
DRA4 END1.MES H x ?
This is supposedly the only way to see an ending with EVERYONE
present.

The following worked for me for the Chinese version of the game that
apparently was DOS-compatible; it may require extra steps for the
DOS/V version, which I did not test.
Game requires no special software to display Chinese characters, but
does require at least 600KB free lower memory (possibly also some EMS
(expanded memory) or XMS but I can't be sure), and a mouse. If you're
playing under MS-DOS (not in a Windows DOS box), you'll need to load
the mouse driver before starting the game, or it will hang the
computer so badly you may need a boot disk to get out of the loop.
What worked for me was:
1. If your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files are pretty empty right
now, or completely empty, you can probably go the "Windows DOS box"
route.
a. C:\CONFIG.SYS should contain the following (and not much more):
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM
DOS=HIGH,UMB
The "RAM" parameter ensures EMM386.EXE tries to set aside as
much low memory as possible. DK4 will need at least 600KB (612
works for me) low memory; I have 16MB EMS but I don't think it's
being used.
b. C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT needs nothing special, but shouldn't be loading
lots of drivers unless absolutely necessary. If they are, load
them high if at all possible. Again, DK4 is a low memory hog!
c. The DK4.BAT file (or whatever you set up to start playing the
game) just needs the command line:
DRA4 START.MES H x ?
where "?" is your drive letter as with the trick above.
You can edit this file to invoke the tricks too.
d. If the game won't start, and gives you some error message about
not enough memory, you'll have to try the next step and reboot
the machine into MS-DOS mode.
2. If necessary, you'll have to reboot the computer each time you want
to play DK4, into MS-DOS mode. Set up a shortcut to DRA4.EXE with the
following parameters:
a. Program tab - "Cmd line:"=?:\dra4\dk4.bat, "Working:"=?:\dra4,
where "?" is the drive and "dra4" is the directory. Now click on
the "Advanced" button and put a check mark in "MS-DOS mode" and
"Warn", set it to "specify a new MS-DOS configuration". In the
CONFIG.SYS box, enter:
Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.Sys
DeviceHigh=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.Exe RAM
DOS=HIGH,UMB
devicehigh=c:\mouse\mouse.exe
(change that last line as necessary for a DOS mouse driver, or
leave it out if it belongs in AUTOEXEC.BAT on your system)
In the AUTOEXEC.BAT box, you should only need the default PATH
statement, a SET BLASTER line if needed, and a DOS mouse driver
if there wasn't one in CONFIG.SYS.
b. Set up the DK4.BAT file as in item #1.c. above. You may want to
put these lines above the "DRA4" one:
pause
C:\windows\command\mem /c /p
pause
That way, you can check if your mouse driver is being loaded
properly, and press Ctrl-C if things get screwed up. Once the
game tries to start, if it doesn't find a mouse, it will get
stuck and may not want to boot into Windows again without a
boot floppy.
c. Unfortunately, you can't pop back and forth between an online
walkthrough - or this file - and the game while you're in
MS-DOS mode. But it's better than not being able to play DK4 at
all!
The game MUST be put in the DRA4 directory of a hard drive, e.g.
H:\DRA4, or it will not load saved games properly.

DK4 uses 640*400 16-color VGA graphics. Yes, 16 colors! But they're
selected very well, I usually only thought the pallete was too small
when wandering around towns and terrain.
If you can find the program GP42BMP, you can use it to convert the
.GP4 files in the game directory to .BMPs that you can easily view.
.GP4 seems to be an Elf-specific format. Susie may also convert the
.GP4 files if there's a conversion module, but I didn't have one.
Sound/music sounds pretty pitiful on my SoundBlaster compatible, no
voice. Didn't find any way to setup sound, or turn it off during play.

Use the DK4.BAT file or shortcut to DRA4 that you built following my
directions above to run the game.

THE PC VERSION
While there are at least 2 FAQ/walkthrough files on www.gamefaqs.com
for DK4, they're both for the Playstation version of the game. The
significant differences between that and the DOS version are:
1. Presence of H graphics. Some animated H scenes where the mouse
pointer changes depending on what you're pointing at. Don't know if
you can screw these up by picking the wrong actions.
2. Different controls. Use the mouse for primary control, keyboard
arrows if necessary. Press Ctrl key to zip through text display. Left
mouse button moves the character directly towards where you click,
right mouse button tries to intelligently move there. Left click on
the text box at the lower part of the screen to pop up the menu, but
it may take many tries (try very short clicks).
3. Yucky sound on the PC. The animations are probably much better on
the PSX too, although smaller in resolution.
Since the H scenes trick listed above is verified to work, I'll call
this one done without actually playing it to the end. The following
is just what I found helpful to actually play DK4 a little bit. I got
the character names from the existing PSX version walkthrough/FAQ
files.

After starting the game, you should see an animation of the Elf logo
and a fairy. At this point, you can press the Ctrl key to skip past
3 graphics screens showing a lot of the game's characters. You have
to sit through an animated DK4 logo, then mouse click to get your
first menu. This one should have 6 choices, the first 5 of which are
"load saved game #x", and the last is "start new game".
The copy of the game that I got had all 5 saves set to the same
town near the beginning of the game. You should start a new game at
least once to see the introductory graphics. Lots of neat scenes and
dialogue to set up the story, which I just clicked through...
Finally, the hero will appear in the town of Sonia (because the sign
in the previous graphic said so). Left-click in the lower black box
(it sometimes doesn't work) to bring up a menu. At first, it will have
only 4 options; when you find ATK and DEF increases, they will appear
as the first options on the menu so you can allocate them to your
party members. These in-town menu options are:
(ATK increase allocate, with # you have)
(DEF increase allocate, with # you have)
both of these will list the characters in your party, plus
a cancel option. pick one to see stats. can then allocate from
1 to 5 (if you have them) increases (top option(s)) or cancel.
Load saved game - 1 to 5, cancel
Game speed - 1 (fast) to 7 (slow); I prefer 6 on my P3-733
Quit game - yes, no
Exit the menu
Most menus/choices in the game have a "cancel" or "no" at the bottom
of the list.
Walk around town to get the hang of the left and right mouse buttons,
and walk into people to talk to them. Many will disappear after you
talk to them several times. The old guy in the upper right corner
won't, until you find the priest and talk to him. The priest was Rolf
in KoX, but the name in the Japanese version was "Baan". The toughest
townsperson to find is the one hidden near some hay near the center of
town; answer with the bottom choice to get one ATK or DEF increase
before he disappears. Now go through the wall in the far northeast
corner of the town, and you'll find a secret building with a girl in
it. After talking a bit, the top option of 2 got me an animated H
scene with Marian; the bottom one you get nuttin'. Then the
green-haired twerp pervert (Rainasu?) shows up. Leave the building and
talk to the priest, and now he thinks it's OK for his little boy
(Seiru/Sail) to go with you. Leave the town.
A few graphics, and you're in the second town. Sail runs off, and you
explore the town until you feel like going past those 2 guards on the
"north" side. Talk to the king twice, finally a guard comes in, and
then go find Sail near the east exit of the town. You'll see graphics
of the black cloud, then Eto shows up to get you out of there.
You'll start your first battle. Left-click on a character to get a hex
grid of how far they can move (the middle # on the bottom display).
The left # is the range of their attack, and the right # is their
strength from 9 down to 1; 0 is out/dead. You have only 6 turns for
this one, so triple-team the foes! (Have Sail attack the first 2
before the hero or Eto do.) Right-click to de-select a character if
you want to move somebody else first instead. It looks like the
character facing doesn't matter. The 3 buttons on the bottom right of
the screen are: quit game, end turn, ?. The On/Off in the bottom right
corner seems to be for battle animations. Right-click on any character
or enemy to get a status screen. Right-click on an empty map hex to
toggle the hex grid on/off.
Assuming you beat all 3 enemies before you run out of turns, you
go to the third town and FINALLY get to save the game! Look for the
building with a jar sign, talk to the guy with glasses. You're
finally at the point where my copy of the game had its 5 saves.
Go recruit another character at the blacksmith, I suggest the girl.
When you try to leave town (walk around the girl blocking the way),
a guy on a horse will appear. Talk to the girl in the bed, then save
the game and try to leave town again. This time, you'll have a
battle. Note that you can't place the guy on the horse, just all the
others, but you have to move the horseman on his first turn or he'll
be slaughtered! The hex grid will show where you can place the other
characters, or you can press the button on the top right of the box
that shows them all to "auto-deploy"; I suggest you do it yourself.
There's an increase on the map just south of the southern end of the
mud. When you have a character end movement on one of these spots, the
character gets an instant +1 (later 2) to ATK, DEF or MOVE (although I
can't tell which). I think only characters that kill the enemy get any
experience-based increases to their stats.
Win that battle, and of course you're in a different town. Check out
the girl squatting for a pee in the upper left corner. Go recruit at
the blacksmith (I took the girl instead of the old horseman). Now try
to leave town and you'll get a scene with Eto and Natasha (the girl
in the bed) and have to try again. Save again, leave town and face
another battle. This one's tougher, only because you really want to
keep your horseman alive to help you chase down that ridiculously high
defense enemy horseman at the end. The 6 move "dragon" enemy is best
attacked by Sail and the magicians in your party. I was never able to
win by defeating that last enemy horseman; the battle ends if one of
your characters enters the lower center hex of the east town.
And now you're in an elf village with, of course, dead elves lying
around and one live one. You can find 6 ATK and 4 DEF increases here,
plus the hero can have sex with the live elf.
There's a MOVE increase on this battlefield, on the northeast part of
the map on the vertical line of hexes that includes the small town.
Remember to have somebody stop in that town to see an H scene and
unlock another female character to appear in the big town when you
win that battle. Again, you can try to win by killing that last
enemy horseman with the high DEF, but I just walked into the lower
central hex of the northeast town.

- That's as far as I got with playing thiss game. As you can get the H
scenes by using the trick above, I'd consider this one "solved" only
in the "H graphics" sense. I'd really like to see this game translated
to English someday, then I'll be happy to write a real walkthrough
for it.
